Four RPS athletes qualify for AAU Junior Olympics

Jackson Hefty (far left in the photo on the left) and Madalyn Hefty (center in the photo on the right) were two of four RPS athletes to qualify for the AAU Junior Olympic Games.

JOLIET – Four Rockford Public Schools 205 athletes earned trips to Greensboro, North Carolina, to compete in the AAU Junior Olympics.

Madalyn Hefty, Jackson Hefty, Aiden Gasmund and Michelle Gasmund all qualified at the AAU Region 13 Qualifier in Joliet. The qualifier was held from June 27 to June 30.

The Heftys and Gasmunds compete for the Rockford FIRE track program, which is run by the Rockford Park District.

Madalyn Hefty qualified in both the 800-meter run and the 1,500 for 11-year-olds. She finished fifth in the 800 qualifier and third in the 1,500 in Joliet.

Jackson Hefty also qualified in the 800 and 1,500 for 12-year-olds. Jackson finished fourth in the 800 and second in the 1,500. 

Both Jackson and Madalyn will be attending Eisenhower Middle School.

Michelle Gasmund also qualified in the 800 and 1,500 for 15 and 16-year-olds. Gasmund was sixth in the 800 and fourth in the 1,500. Gasmund is an East High School student.

Aiden Gasmund qualified in three events. Aiden finished fourth in the boys shot put for 12-year-olds, fourth for the long jump and fourth for the discus. Aiden goes to Flinn.

The AAU Junior Olympic Games take place from July 24 to August 3
