Giving thanks to our coaches

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Sports Coalition is extremely thankful on this Thanksgiving Day for all the staff and coaches who work daily with District 205 students to help them succeed.

The Rockford Public Schools resevoir of dedicated and effective coaches has never been deeper, which was illustrated by the fact that RPS coaches earned coach of the year honors in four of the six sports that were played this fall.

Rick Durso was named coach of the year in boys cross country for guiding the Guilford Vikings to third place in the conference. Durso’s Vikings program should continue to rise. Rick’s top two runners, Brandson Lawson and Juan DelReal, are a freshman and sophomore. Durso has been a teacher in RPS for 19 years.

Ben Mena was named coach of the year in girls golf after leading the Rockford co-op team to second place. Mena has led the girls team to conference titles in five of the last seven years.

Jeff Compton was named coach of the year in boys golf for leading East to fourth place in the NIC-10. The E-Rabs did it with balance. Just one East golfer finished in the top 10 in the conference tournament. Compton has been a PE teacher at East since 2011.

Tracy Palmer was named coach of the year in girls tennis after guiding the Knights to their second straight NIC-10 title. And Auburn did it in style with Knights winning both singles titles and all three doubles titles.  This was Palmer’s 27th season leading the Auburn tennis program.
