Guilford trio wins Esports title

GLENWOOD – Guilford High School’s Rocket League team knocked off teams from Naperville Central and Schaumburg Public Schools to win the Illinois High School Esports Association title Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings’ trio of senior Evan Schanfeldt and sophomores Aidan Suh and Juan Jass swept Naperville in four overtime games (2-1, 3-2, 4-3 and 4-3). Schaumburg, though, roared out to a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven finals by winning 2-1 and 5-3.

“The team played solid, but the biggest factor was the team reflecting on game film during the 5-minute post game breaks after game two and game four,” Guilford Esports coach Jeff Pitner said in an email. “They nailed their issues and adjusted gameplay accordingly.”

The Vikings won the title by winning four of the final five games. The Vikings won the decisive seventh game 2-1.
