J-Hawks star and college hall of famer now trains next generation of trainers

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Deann Trapp Petitgrout, one of Jefferson’s top girls athletes of the 1990s, is a college professor at her alma mater, Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa.

Deann was a two-time first-team All-NIC-9 star for the J-Hawks’ basketball program in 1993-1994 and 1994-1995. She also excelled, to a lesser extent, in volleyball and soccer. She was an honorable mention volleyball player in 1992 and 1994 and honorable mention forward in soccer in 1992 and second team in 1993.

At Clarke, Deann focused on basketball and rewrote the school’s record book. She was a three-time NIIC All-Conference player for the Crusers – now called the Pride – and three-time team MVP.

She set the Clarke record for points in a game (40), rebounds in a game (23), season scoring average (22.4) and season rebounding average (13.2). She was inducted into the Clarke athletic hall of fame in 2014.

Deann also was an outstanding student, earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in biology in 1999. She added a Master’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from Northern Illinois University in 2001.

She’s been working at Clarke since 2000 where she’s an instuctor of athletic training.
